Taste of Freedom: Baltimore (1820–1861) Guided Walking Experience

Taste of Freedom Tours invites you to discover Baltimore’s hidden freedom histories hiding in plain sight across the Inner Harbor and historic downtown. Explore Baltimore during the Antebellum Era, 1820–1861, a transformative period when the city stood at the crossroads of slavery and freedom. Walk the places where freedom seekers, abolitionists, free Black communities and ordinary people confronted extraordinary choices. Through storytelling, historic imagery and place-based interpretation, you’ll encounter familiar names like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, along with others whose stories most Americans were never taught. But Taste of Freedom isn’t simply about learning what happened. It’s about understanding where it happened, who was there, the choices they faced, and why those choices still matter. As you move through Baltimore, places you may have passed many times before begin to look different. Streets, buildings, waterfronts and landmarks become connected to stories of courage, contradiction, resistance and the continuing struggle for freedom. By the end of the experience, our goal is simple: You’ll never look at Baltimore the same way again. - History happened here. - The struggle for freedom happened here. - And the stories are still here—hidden in plain sight.
