Description

On April 18–19, 1861, Baltimore became the setting for one of the most consequential events in American history. Just days after the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to defend the nation's capital. Among those who answered the call was Nicholas "Nick" Biddle, a 65-year-old free Black man from Pottsville, Pennsylvania in Washington Artillery uniform. Although federal regulations did not permit Black enlistment at the time, Biddle traveled to Washington as an orderly aide with the Washington Artillerists, one of the companies that formed Pennsylvania's First Defenders. As Union troops passed through Baltimore, violent clashes erupted between soldiers and 2,500- 10,000 pro-Confederate sympathizers. During the confrontation, Biddle was struck in the head with a brick, becoming the first peson wounded in the Civil War and a powerful symbol of Black patriotism and service at the very beginning of the conflict. This immersive walking experience follows the events of the April 1861 Baltimore Riots through the streets, rail stations, waterfront corridors, and public spaces where history unfolded. Explore Baltimore's divided loyalties, discover how transportation networks became battlegrounds, and examine why the city occupied such a pivotal position between North and South. Through powerful place-based storytelling, you'll encounter the people, places, and decisions that transformed Baltimore into the site of the Civil War's first bloodshed and helped shape the nation's path toward four years of war. Walk the streets where America changed forever.
